When i heard that this exhibition would be placed in Ankara, i was very exited about it. Then i went to see and i can say that i totally satisfied. In my opinion, because of being journalist, Steve McCurry focuses on the events, movements, or exact feelings on his photographs. In some other photography exhibitions which i visited before, i realise that, every person can take these photos if the same scene would be there. Actually, even if the photograph would be a landscape or vista photos, there should be special observation or a different perspective. When i think of them, i visited this exhibition and i am strongly agree with my ideas. 🙂

The photography is not a valid artwork when photographer add nothing to the current one. Then, Steve McCurry is very successful photographer in that manner. Now, i want to add my favourite ones and you will realize what i told above.

When i visited the exhibition center in Contemporary Art Museum, Çankaya, Ankara, i saw some paintings which have lots of colors and the colors were amazing. I went near them and there was no name or explanation about the paintings. Probably the exhibition of these paintings would finished yet and there were just paintings on the wall. I wanted to share these paintings with you without any explanation but i can say that the colors of them very attractive and i very like them.

For last 2 weeks, There has been an exhibiton which is about the important architectural examples in Ankara, in Çankaya Çağdaş Sanatlar Merkezi. The exhibition has an importance as including 120 residential building which is choosen from all because of their characteristic specialities. I believe that the affect of this event is huge because every person who visit the exhibition has already known and experienced most of these buildings even if they just saw.

Firstly, the buildings are ordered according to their construction times. So, we can follow all the buildings in a time period and we can easily observe common approaches. It starts with the year 1930. The shape architects prefer to use, the plans, the apperiances of the buildings, they all have resemblances in 1930-1932 , if it is apartment or not. The modernist idea which is started to be popular in Turkey as it is in the world, is valid and common. The architects use some geometric forms, or unload a mass from the whole and create new and unusual spaces via this unloading. In apartments, we observe the vertical or horizontal linearity on the façade. In 1930’s there are very pure forms and basic shapes in residential buildings. After that period, we observe that something started to change. The modernist idea is still valid but the approaches start to be shaped by architects. Also, the area which the city is placed is becoming larger and different sites provide different approaches. We can follow that, the time and the sites are related. Because, people started to live another part of the city in a very regularly time periods in Ankara. The sites are becoming popular and constructed step by step, we can observe the times which the sites are constructed in this exhibition. For example, in 1930’s, there are 2 site which construction is started, they are Kızılay (Atatürk Bulvarı), and Ulus (Altındağ – Necatibey Mahallesi). When we come to the 1940’s we can see that Anıttepe, Bahçelievler and Yenimahalle is started to be constructed. In 1950’s we start to see Gazi Osman Paşa, Güvenevler, Mamak and Keçiören.

The important point that i observe is, 51 building from all (120) are made in 1950’s. And, 44 of them are built in 1960’s. So the density of buildings which the exhibition includes, is in 1950’s and 1960’s. In these years, the buildings are mostly huge residential apartment blocks. All of them have their own surface treatments, we see lots of balcony decorations and some different trials. In these years, the social and the political environment started to be suitable for reaching new stranger ideas from all around the world. So in these years, Turkish architects started to reach works of popular architects in the world and they started to apply the styles or approaches which the popular ones use. So we observe lots of different trials in these years. Maybe we can say that the variaty in architecture in Ankara mostly starts in 1950’s.

If we mention about the importance of some of buildings in terms of having different cultural value in Ankara, we should start with Soysal Apartment in Kızılay, which is not still here today. The building has a socializing aim at the first time in Ankara, the habitation idea is used in there and the architect created social common spaces which are a casino, a restourant, shops and a cinema. The users of Soysal Apartment were elite people and lots of them are storied in many books. With its central place (Kızılay Square) and its social spaces and important elite users, the building has a cultural important and also it is one of the first examples of huge apartments in Ankara.

Another point that we can observe and be aware of when we visit the exhibiton, is that, some of (especially the oldest) buildings are out of repair. Althuogh they have different architectural importence, they have such an appariences that people can not realize any specialities of them. They looks very dirty, old and out of repair. Beside the situation of looking bad, some of them have a risk of collapsing or deconstucting. Maybe, because of their apperiences, some think that they are not importance and they can easily decide to deconstuct them. If nobody care of these buildings, everybody can ignore them. People who aware of the value of these buildings should do something to protect or make beautiful them as they deserve. After that, poeple can recognize the importance of the buildings and also importance of protecting these and these kinds of buildings.

After visiting the exhibiton, i am aware of that some buildings have to be preserved. I am also aware of that, there are lots of valuable residential building which deserve to be known and searched about. There are lots of architectural examples which belongs their own times. I am aware of that we are lucky to live in Ankara because of being the newest capital of Turkey Republic, and we can follow all the developments in times of the republic. The city also has no longer history of construction beside some sites. It is quite useful and will be useful to have a total knowledge about 50 years of residential architecture in Ankara. I am very happy to visit it. You can reach the internet site of “Sivil Mimari Bellek: Ankara” from this link:
